Local author and artist Jenny Grant has produced a new children’s book with the aid of a grant from Coigach and Assynt Living Landscape Partnership (CALLP).

Between Mountain and Sea – A Dog’s Adventure in Coigach and Assynt, celebrates the landscape and nature of the north and west Highlands.

Jenny, who began drawing and writing as a child, has already written two books – Charlie the Chameleon’s Unfortunate Adventure; and The Guillemot Who Wouldn’t Jump, which is based on Handa Island, where she lived and worked.

She said: “My ambition in life is to illustrate and write children’s books about the environment, mostly drawing on my experience of working with people and wildlife of my native Highlands.”

As the title suggests, her latest book features a dog’s adventures in the landscape.

“The book is a culmination of many hours walking through my local landscape with my dog, Milly. I tried to include as many animals and plants as possible, things I have seen in the area,” said Jenny who would normally write a story first and base drawings around the words but in this instance completed the artwork first.

She continued: “I really loved making the book and I want others, both children and adults, to read it and feel they want to get out there and see what they can find.

“I want them to look a bit closer, to see the wee details but to feel the expanse of the landscape, to feel part of it, to look after it, to respect it and feel how small we are in relation to life.”

Jenny successfully applied to CALLP for a small grant to help produce the book. A video highlighting the book’s production will be shown at the CALLP conference which takes place on August 18 and marks the end of the initiative.
