DINGWALL and Highland Marts Ltd sold 16 prime cattle and 1233 prime sheep today.

Prime bullocks (2) averaged 232.0p (-13.0p) and sold to 232.0p per kg and £1,682.00 gross twice for 725kg Simmental crosses both from Balnageith, Forres.

Prime heifers (14) averaged 243.7p (-3.0p) and sold to 256.0p per kg for a 625kg Limousin cross from Burnside of Montbletton, Banff selling to John M Munro Ltd, Dingwall and £1,725.50 gross for a 725kg Limousin cross also from Burnside of Montbletton.

The verdict: “There was plenty of weight in the fat cattle ring which distorts the pence per kilo average, however the pounds per head average was up on the week. All classes met a firm enquiry in particular 550-600kg heifers. More handy weighted sorts are required on a weekly basis.”

Other leading prices per kg:

Heifers: Lyne of Urchany Farm, Geddes, (LimX),251.0p, (SimX) 246.0p, (twice), (LimX) 246.0p, (SimX) 234.0p; Burnside of Montbletton, (LimX) 249.0p, 245.0p, (thrice), 234.0p & 238.0p, Balnageith, (LimX) 246.0p, 245.0p & 236.0p.

Other leading prices per head:

The mart also sold 1233 prime sheep.

Old season lambs (985) averaged 255.8p (+6.7p) and sold to 275.3p and £142 gross.

Feeding sheep (248) and sold to £218 gross.

Old season lambs (985) averaged 255.8p (+6.7p) and sold to 275.3p for a pair of 42.5kg Beltex crosses from Torgorm, Conon Bridge and £142 gross for a pen of 70kg Cheviots from Muirton, Munlochy.

Feeding sheep (248) sold to £218 gross for Beltex Cross Ram Dalmagarry Farm, Moy.

The verdict: “The hogg ring was more buoyant again this week with all classes sharper. Heavy sorts were privy to largest increase on the week as numbers are maybe lightening up and down the country. Another strong ewe trade was witnessed with power being in serious short supply. With not one big continental ewe forward and the sale yet again consisting of mostly lean and hill types a tremendous average of £105 a head was recorded. More numbers of all classes of ewes on a weekly basis are required.”
