Rumours that Golspie High School bus park is to become a designated overnight stop for motorhomes and campervans have been dismissed as “nonsense”.

East Sutherland and Edderton ward councillor Richard Gale moved to scotch the suggestion at a meeting of Golspie Community Council earlier this month.

Cllr Richard Gale said motorhomes and campervans seeking to stay overnight at Golspie would be "pointed towards" the camp site at Golspie Business Park, which has come on stream since this image was taken in August.
Cllr Richard Gale said motorhomes and campervans seeking to stay overnight at Golspie would be "pointed towards" the camp site at Golspie Business Park, which has come on stream since this image was taken in August.

He said: “There are individuals concerned about the school bus park and rumours going around that it is going to be turned into a motorhome and campervan designated area. That is all nonsense.

“We do not need this facility (overnight parking area) any more. We have a commercial facility outside the village and will be pointing people to that.”

However Cllr Gale said it was intended to open up the car park, sited next to the school playing grounds and to the rear of Golspie Medical Practice, to more vehicles.

He said he had had contact with the bus company involved and the school’s parent council.

“We do need to find a balance and ensure safe access to and from school for children,” he said. “We should be able to get a compromise going forward. It is a case of getting everyone to follow rules.”

Mr Gale added that signage was required along with "sensible" white lining to demarcate vehicle spaces.

Community council secretary Henrietta Marriott said she too had been approached by people voicing concerns over the future plans for the parking area.

“I have had telephone conversation with the chairperson of the parent council,” she told the virtual meeting. “There is a lot of worry over it being turned into overnight spaces for motorhomes and campervans."
