The man, who has not been identified, was walking on the shore at Portvasgo, near Talmine, when the incident happened at around 10.30am.

Another person present at the time called the emergency services.

Paramedics who turned up at the scene radioed for help from the coastguards because of the difficult terrain and also because the tide was coming in.

An Aberdeen-based spokesperson for the Coastguard and Maritime Agency (CMA) explained: "The incident happened on the shore at the bottom of a steep hill and paramedics needed help to stretcher the injured man up the hill."

Coastguard teams from Melness and Durness were tasked but the incident was over by the time members of the Durness team arrived,

Seven members of the Melness team turned out and helped carry the stretcher up the hill to the waiting ambulance.

The CMA spokesman said: "It was a fairly minor incident from our perspective and was dealt with easily enough, although I am sure it was a much bigger deal for the injured man."
