SSE Renewables has made a substantial donation of protective clothing and footwear to a Sutherland-based rural training centre.
The renewable energy company has supplied Lochview Rural Training, located at Achfrish, Lairg, with 20 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits, including 3-in-1 waterproof jackets, overalls, waterproof trousers and steel toecap boots.
Founder Cara Cameron, a youth development officer, said the donation would enable the centre to increase its support for young people.
“This donation will help to reduce barriers to young people who want to attend our courses, especially those from low-income families,” she said.
“It is like Christmas has come early here at Lochview Rural Training - the young people were so excited and couldn’t wait to wear the PPE.”
Mrs Cameron opened the facility in July this year after becoming concerned that students were having to leave the county to access rural skills training and experience.
She recently gave a talk on her enterprise to the Rotary Club of East Sutherland, saying a Young Crofters' Club met weekly at the centre and in addition, a mixed range of training has been delivered so far.
Gillian Wilson, SSE Renewables project manager for the Achany Extension Wind Farm, said: “SSE Renewables plays an active role in the communities where we operate.
“We are pleased to support an innovative and local social enterprise such as Lochview Rural Training which is promoting important land-management skills among younger people.
“We undertake habitat management plants and peatland restoration programmes to enhance the biodiversity of our renewable energy sites.
“Lochview Rural Training is not only helping develop the skills our industry needs for the future but is playing a powerful role in efforts to combat climate change.”
