In exchange for a donation to the charity, 12 solicitors from across the Highlands have offered their services to draw up a will throughout May.

Launched in 2003, the annual campaign has already helped many to plan their future and tackle the process which can be daunting.

Karen Duff, corporate fundraiser at the hospice, said: “Many people are afraid to make a will – perhaps they don’t know where to start or are afraid of the cost.

“Our incredible partner solicitors are on board to guide you through the process, and will donate the fee they receive to the hospice.”

Last year, Lee Duff took part in in the event, which she was glad for when she faced a cancer diagnosis only three months later.

“I had been meaning to update my will for a long time, but like many of us it was something I just never got round to doing,” she said.

“I was aware of ‘Make a Will Month’ that the Highland Hospice run each year, and having had experience of friends and family in the hospice, I was aware of the wonderful facility and the support it provides.

“Last year I finally got round to it. It was quick, easy and the suggested donation was forwarded to the hospice.

“We always think we’re not old enough to need a will, but everyone should have one as you never know what’s round the corner. It gave me peace of mind knowing my will was finally updated and I then went on to utilise the services of my chosen solicitor for other matters.”

Rebecca Fraser, partner at South Forrest solicitors in Inverness, is participating in the event. She is a specialist in drawing up wills and the firm is a proud supporter of the charity.

“The hospice is an invaluable local resource that provides much-needed services to patients and fantastic levels of support to their family and friends,” she said. “It is very important to us to be able to help those who benefit from the hospice.

“People should take part in Make a Will month as it allows them to have a will prepared whilst also donating to charity.

“It is very important for people to put a will in place to ensure that their money and possessions are distributed as they would wish.

“If someone dies without a will the law provides how their property is allocated and that may not be as they would have wished. Having a will also makes the administration of their estate much more straightforward, quicker and cheaper when the time comes, which makes things easier for their family and friends who are left behind.”
