Changes at the top of support group for young carers in East Sutherland as long-serving manager retires

Myra Clark, long-serving manager of The Young Karers of East Sutherland (Tykes) has retired.

Mrs Clark started as a fieldworker with Crossroads - which provided support for carers and their families - in 1999 and became manager of the Crossroads project in 2003.

Crossroads evolved into Tykes in 2005 with Mrs Clark at its head.

She has led the charity through difficult challenges including the pandemic, and also presided over a period of expansion and a move of offices and shop.

Mrs Clark left the post on May 31 following a farewell event when she was given a by staff.

Tykes' board chairman Major General Patrick Marriott said: “Myra was actually the fourth Tykes manager, if its forerunner organisation Crossroads is taken into account. She has been by far the longest-serving.

“Myra was pivotal to Tykes for many years and provided vital continuity, a wealth of experience and much kindness.

“She is a proper ‘people person’ and hugely respected - not least by me.

“But I know I can speak on behalf of the whole current and past board and staff and the many young carers themselves when I say a huge thank-you for her long and distinguished service to us all.”

The board has recently appointed Denise Campbell, who has worked for nine years with the service as a sessional support and field worker, as the new project leader for Tykes.

Major General Marriott said: “Denise will bring new ideas, her own style, but the same standards as Myra. Tykes is hugely fortunate in having her and the board has every confidence in her, matched I’m sure by the Tykes themselves, who know her well.”
