Girlguiding Highlands and Islands will celebrate the formation of their new Girlguiding county by hosting a virtual festival – Fusion Fest – on June 12-13.

The new county is the result of a merger of six Girlguiding counties and will cover areas including Argyll, Ross-shire, Caithness, Sutherland, Western Isles and Orkney.

Girls and young women from across the Highlands and Islands are invited to come along to take part in a weekend of fun and adventure with activities such as rocket building, games, yoga, Zumba and self-care sessions for all ages. There will also be a den building challenge, as well as a design your own mocktail class. All activities will be hosted over Zoom, Facebook live and YouTube.

Liz Bamber, county commissioner for Caithness, said: “This is going to be a great opportunity for girls from across Highlands and Islands and further afield to join together for a fantastic selection of diverse activities. Existing members and those who would like to see what Guiding has to offer are welcome to take part and find out all that guiding has to offer.”

The festival is open to all girls and young women and they don’t need to be a member of Girlguiding to join in. Non-members are invited to take part to find out more about all the fun and exciting things Girlguiding has to offer.

The theme of the festival is “Growing Stronger Together” to mark the importance of the new areas coming together. As part of the event, girls aged 10-18 can enter a competition to design the publicity material for the event.

The festival is part of the charity’s work to brings benefits to girls and young women right across Scotland, from fostering new friendships and confidence, to developing life skills and having fun. Many other guiding groups are hosting similar events, adapting their approach to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its members while face to face indoor unit meetings are suspended.

For over 100 years guiding has made many positive differences in communities right across Scotland. As guiding groups adapt to the new coronavirus restrictions, the charity’s volunteers are committed to deliver guiding in new and innovative ways so that they can continue to keep connected and empower girls and young women.
