Carbisdale Castle back on the market: Samantha Kane puts iconic mansion house up for sale just two years after purchasing it
Carbisdale Castle has been put on the market after just two years after it was bought by barrister Samantha Kane, the self-proclaimed Lady Carbisdale.
The Category B-listed, 19-bedroom mansion is being advertised on the online site On The Market with a guide price of £5,000,000.
The seller states: “Carbisdale Castle is an impressive and imposing large mansion house built in the Scottish Baronial style on a precipitous site above the inner Kyle of Sutherland with outstanding views in all directions.
The sale includes approximately 29 acres of mature grounds and policies including a “natural loch with peaceful wooded setting”.
It comes with planning consent for the development of a basement level and clifftop spa.
Samantha Kane bought the iconic castle, which was built in the early 1990s as a residence for the widowed Duchess of Sutherland, for more than £1 million in October 2022.
The castle was run as a youth hostel for decades before lying empty for several years during which time there were growing concerns about its dilapidated state. It was sold to a London-based investment company after the asking price was reduced to £900,000.
Ms Kane promised to invest in the property and said she wanted to turn the castle into an exclusive members club.
The vendor said: “The current owner has undertaken a vast restoration of key parts of the castle to turn it back into the historic castle that it once was.
“The intention of the project was to combine all of the decorative features and grandeur of the Dowager duchess of Sutherland’s original creation with services, systems, fixtures, fittings and layout of the highest contemporary quality together with the reorganisation of the existing accommodation to suit 21st century living and the potential development of a spa and swimming pool as complementary features.
“The current position is that significant work has been carried out and the castle will be offered with the remaining few bedrooms finished, together with the wellness suite to be completed by the existing owner, subject to contract with the full purchase price paid.”
Ms Kane, the vice-chairman of the former Ardgay and District Community Council, has always insisted that she intended Carbisdale Castle to be her long-term home,
However, her tenure at the castle has not been without controversy.
Ardgay and District Community Council opposed her ultimately successful application to Forestry and Land Scotland to purchase three hectares of steeply sloping land on three sides of the castle.
An extraordinary general meeting was held last November to discuss the matter.
In February this year the community council collapsed after four of its five members resigned. Ms Kane was the only remaining community councillor.
An election to reconstitute the council is currently under way.
The Northern Times has asked Ms Kane for comment regarding the sale.
