Assynt Development Trust is inviting young students from its area who would like financial support to pursue a project, to apply to the Luis Gouveia Fund.

The group administers the fund, which has grants of up to £500 available for young people from Assynt who wish to travel for the purposes of pursuing charity work, a sporting or cultural endeavour or some such worthy project.

A spokesman for Assynt Development Trust said: "We welcome and encourage applications from young Assynt residents in higher or further education to apply to the fund for financial support. Funding can apply to gap years and electives."

The Luis Gouveia Fund, which was established in the early 1990s, has an interesting history.

It was originally set up to facilitate youth exchanges after a group of Assynt teenagers visited the Portuguese island of Madeira and later hosted a visit from young Madeirans.

However, further youth exchanges did not take place and the focus of the fund changed, although it has remained centred on supporting young people in the area.

Applicants should email details of their project and how they would benefit from support to either of the trust's two development officers: adam.assyntdevelopmenttrust@gmail.com or to: ewen.assyntdevelopmenttrust@gmail.com
