Cairngorm Mountain's slopes will reopen this weekend for what is likely to be one of the final hurrahs of the season.

The ski resort has been reporting 20 centimetres of fresh snow has fallen on the upper mountain with drifting in places with some hard old snow on the upper slopes.

The current weather report for the resort states that heavy snow is falling and the temperature is -5C.

There are no pistes open below mid mountain and the snow level is at 700 metres.

Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd chief Susan Smith told the Strathy: "We got more snow overnight which has enabled us to operate the M1 and Ciste tow tomorrow.

"The Cas tow is marginal due to the base of the Gun Barrel and the team are trying to see if we can use it.

"Let’s hope for more snow tonight.

"At this stage, we are taking one day at a time. If we get more snow then, of course, we will open for Easter but we are at the mercy of Mother Nature."

A Cairngorm Mountain spokesperson said earlier this afternoon: "Snowsports will reopen on Saturday and Sunday. There is no terrain open for beginners."

He added: "If the Cas tow is not operating, than there will be no terrain open for intermediates as the M1 is for experts only."

Walking is required up and down to mid station to access the snow line at the M1 Poma.

The forecast is for further snowfall tonight with north westerly winds 20mph to 30mph forecast at the Base Station and a temperature of -2C at the base station rising to 0C, and further snow showers by late afternoon.
