Two teams from Brora and three from Golspie headed south to take part in the Ardross Alness Bowling Club’s open pairs competition.

Brora’s Angus Mackenize and Angus Mackay, twice winners of the competition and runners-up last year, won through to the quarter-finals with a comfortable win against John and Grace Dingwall from the Beauly club.

They then faced Alness pair May Gillespie and Bob Reid. The home team held a 12-5 lead, but a six from the Brora pair got them back into the game, losing only one more end as they won through to the semis 18-14.

Their semi-final aganist Tain’s Dave Coe and John Godfrey went a lot easier than anticipated, taking a 10-0 lead after eight ends, winning through to their third successive final by 14 shots to 8.

Awaiting in the final were the Alness pair of George Dunne (winning lead last year) partnered this year by Dave Macrae.

The Brora pair led 5-4 after eight ends, then the home team pulled away to lead 12-7 going ino the final end.

On a short last end, Mackay lay four shots as the skips went to play. Dunne’s first three bowls all ran through, but his last bowl just managed to reach the head and cut the count. Mackenzie was left with only one shot to play, take the bowl out, which he duly did to lie six shots and lift the Salvessen Cup for the third time by 13 shots to 12.
