Bonar junior golfer excels at Gleneagles
Lee Mackenzie of Bonar Bridge has come fourth in the Highland Spring Junior Masters Grand Final at Gleneagles, finishing only two points behind leader Liam McDowell from Wigtownshire.
Twelve handicapper Mackenzie was involved in a tremendously exciting finish.
It was a battle of the boys, with a massive seven players locked on 34 points as the last group of youngsters came down the 18th. Michael Brodie, a five-handicapper from Strathmore, appeared set to claim the title on count back, only for McDowell to just edge him out by reaching 36 points. Calum Taggart of Eastwood took third place, with MacKenzie coming fourth and 24-handicapper Cameron Grant fifth.
Gleneagles hosts the Ryder Cup in 2014 and would love a climax to golf’s greatest team combat on a par with the finale served up in the boys’ section.
Open to both boys and girls who are a members of an SGU or SLGA affiliated golf club, the Highland Spring Junior Masters is the Scottish Golf Union’s grass roots golf competition.
