Bonar Bridge War Memorial has won the 2016 Legion Scotland Highlands and Islands Best Kept War Memorial competition in the Small Community with Garden section.

It will now be entered into the national competition to compete against winners from other areas.

The judge gave the memorial the maximum score of 103 and said: "This monument is in pristine condition. It is a beautiful memorial recently refurbished, instigated by the hard work of the local Legion Scotland Branch. The borders are neat and tidy with plenty of colour."

Ardgay War Memorial was entered in the War Memorial without Gardens category and obtained a score of 102, just being pipped by the Fort William memorial.

The judge said of the Ardgay memorial: "This monument is in pristine condition each year and a credit to those looking after it."

Both Bonar Bridge and Ardgay memorials are looked after by the Creich and Kincardine Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland with a rota of volunteers.

Branch secretary Fiona Porter said: "We are really delighted by these results. With the Rosehall War Memorial winning the national New Entry category last year we are very proud of our memorials and grateful to all those who help look after them.

“The Bonar Bridge War Memorial underwent a major refurbishment two years ago after the branch obtained funding. This year we have funding from the Big Lottery that has enabled us to repoint the top stones and improve the steps round the memorial.

“In the next week or two the railings will get an extra coat of paint and a new chain will be installed to hold the wreaths. So it really will look immaculate for the march past of the new Branch Standard on September 25 when the Lord Lieutenant will take the salute.

“But the reason we do all this is to show our respect and to remember the fallen who gave their lives for our futures, including those who died at the Somme 100 years ago."
