Birth registration service to reopen on Monday following coronavirus closure; Local authority unveils timetable to deal with backlog
BIRTH registration services run by Highland Council will restart from Monday.
The local authority says it will be in a position to resume the registration function from next next week but makes clear it has a backlog to work through.
Birth registrations have been suspended since late March when the coronavirus lockdown brought many services to a grinding halt.
Highland Council says that to help it work methodically given its backlog of work, "it is important that we register these events in date order wherever possible".
It has issued a list of approximate birth registration timescales in a bid to maintain its workflow.
These are as follows:
Week commencing June 29 – for babies who were born before and up to April 5;
Week commencing July 6 – for babies who were born between April 6 and May 3
Week commencing July 13 – for babies born between May to May 31
Week commencing July 20 – for babies born between June 1 to June 28
People are asked to contact the office in which they wish to register the birth of their child during the suggested week above. The staff will discuss an appropriate time for you to register.
A council spokesman said: "Your appointment will mainly be conducted by telephone, however you will be required to attend the office to sign the register page. The Registrar will arrange a time for you to do this, and will explain the protocols in place for your appointment."
