Big thanks to Brora donors as Poppy Scotland collection totals announced

The results have just come in from the annual Poppy Scotland collection.

Last year the massive total of £800 was given by the people of Clyne, an incredible amount for such a small community.

Ruwan Uduwerage-Perera, who organises the collection on behalf of Brora Community Council, wants to say a huge thank you to everyone who generously bought a poppy or made a donation.

“It’s also really appreciated that so many local businesses are prepared to display a poppy box and put out a collection can (or even two) during October and November. Without their support none of this would be possible,” he said.

“For the past couple of years collection tins have also had QR codes on the side, so it’s still possible to gift some money even if you don’t carry cash. Unfortunately we don’t know how much was given through QR codes, so the total might well be higher.

“We had noticed the effect of the cost of living crisis and recognise that making a charitable donation is more difficult when times are hard. The generosity of local people during the Poppy Appeal is a testament to their gratitude and respect for those who have served.”

The impact of wars on Highland communities, such as Clyne, was profound, with countless families losing loved ones. Poppy Day serves as a collective moment of reflection for the nation.

The funds raised through the Scottish Poppy Appeal go towards various services and programmes aimed at helping former service members. These include financial assistance, mental health support, employment opportunities, and housing initiatives.
