A disqualified driver took to the road during lockdown because the shelves of his local shops were bare and he had heard a supermarket in a nearby community was well-stocked, a court was told.

Sebastian Jurczykowski, Rosskeen Drive, Invergordon, was heading for Lidls in Alness in his Skoda Octavia when he was stopped after being spotted by police at around 8.10am on March 20.

Tain Sheriff Court heard the 42-year-old mechanic had been banned from driving for a year just a month earlier, on February 3, after admitting a drink-driving charge.

Jurczykowski did not have legal representation when he appeared in the dock today but he admitted through an interpreter driving while disqualified and also with no insurance at Roskeen Drive, Castle Avenue and Gordon Terrace, all Invergordon.

Jurczykowski said: "I did this consciously because it was the period of lockdown and our shops in Invergordon were lacking goods on the shelves.

“I was informed that Lidls in Inverness was well stocked. I just had to get into the car to get shopping for the kids because there were no other options.”

Sheriff Gary Aitken imposed a £210 fine and eight month road ban.
