Caithness General Hospital's redesign project has taken "an exciting step forward" with the appointment of a principal supply chain partner.

NHS Highland confirmed that construction company Balfour Beatty will take on the role for the Wick hospital scheme along with another major development in Lochaber.

As managing contractor, the firm will lead the design and construction processes for the refurbishment of Caithness General and Fort William's new hospital.

NHS Highland says the two projects represent an investment of more than £160 million in its rural general hospitals over the next five to seven years.

The health board points out that the Caithness scheme is just one element of a much wider programme of change to adult health and social care services in the county.

NHS Highland's senior responsible officer for the redesigns, Louise Bussell, said: "This is an exciting step forward in the redesign process in both Lochaber and Caithness and reflects NHS Highland's commitment to community services and rural general hospitals across Highland.

"We have a successful track record of working with Balfour Beatty and this relationship is further strengthened by this appointment. We look forward to working closely with Balfour Beatty and local communities over the next few years in delivering innovative, sustainable health and social care facilities in Lochaber and Caithness."

Balfour Beatty's managing director Hector MacAulay said: “I am delighted that Balfour Beatty has been selected to design and deliver the Lochaber and Caithness General Hospital redesign projects.

“This follows our successful completion of the new National Treatment Centre in Inverness and the award-winning community hospitals in Aviemore and Broadford on Skye.

“We look forward to continuing our successful collaborative working relationship with NHS Highland and providing first-class healthcare facilities to the communities in Lochaber and Caithness.”

Balfour Beatty has recently worked with NHS Highland on the new hospitals in Broadford and Aviemore as well as the National Treatment Centre in Inverness. Its design team has "extensive experience of delivering new-build health facilities across Scotland", NHS Highland said.

The Balfour Beatty team for the two projects consists of architects Keppie Design, Inverness-based landscape architects Horner and MacLennan and engineers Hulley and Kirkwood, Mott MacDonald and Buchan Associates.
