Bagpiper sought for Evel Knievel themed event at John O’Groats

A UK motorcycle club, endorsed by the family of the late Evel Knievel, is seeking a bagpiper to play at the start of their JOGLE trek from John O’Groats this month.

Jason Lewis from RIDE Cymru MCC says there are charity events planned for across the UK with themes based on legendary American stunt motorcyclist Evel Knievel.

The riders are endorsed by the family of late stunt rider Evel Knievel.

Jason said: “This is our 13th annual event with the first back in 2012. We were initially an all-Wales event, but we now make it a UK route as our entrants come from all over.

“We are the current world record holders for the largest gathering of people dressed as Evel Knievel when we peaked at 68 in 2019.”

The motorcyclists are looking for a bagpiper to lead the way at John O’Groats for the start of their JOGLE trek on Friday, May 24 at 9am and hope someone local could help them.

“The event is actually ‘kick-starting’ from Ullapool on the morning of Thursday, May 23 with a stop at Kinlochbervie on our way to Thurso.

“That evening we have Knievel International Rugby Kick Challenge kindly hosted by Caithness Rugby Club.

“This is rugby bordering on Monty Python. Last year’s event was at Cardiff Arms Park; where Wales Knievels triumphed.

“We then depart from Thurso on the morning of Friday, May 24 to reach John O’Groats ready for the 9am start of JOGLE Knievels.”

The bike club reached out to the John O’Groat Journal for help in finding a bagpiper and say that “wearing a cape is optional”.

“We will gladly pay their way to be with us. We wish the piper to play our Knievels away from the start of JOGLE 2024. This year we ride in aid of children’s charity NSPCC and we have just passed £24,000 for them on this year’s fundraiser.”

The group raised £30K last year for the NSPCC and have raised £245K in total since they started out in 2012.

“We also have Scottish Knievels amongst our Evel invasion,” added Jason.
