This year’s Bettyhill Gala Queen is 16 year old Anna Magee of Whinneyknowe, a fourth year pupil at Farr High School.

Anna, who comes from a multi-generation musical family, has won a place at Sgoil Chiuil na Gaidhealtachd, the much celebrated musical school in Plockton and will be taking up her place there after the summer holidays.

She certainly hasn’t forgotten about music over the summer break as she has already taken part in a week-long festival with Feis Chataibh and, in her final week of freedom before heading off for Plockton, will be participating in a similar event being run in Bettyhill by Feis Air an Oir.

While she sees both music and the Gaelic language as playing a part in her future life, she isn’t putting all her eggs in one basket and, along with her specialist studies in piano and accordion, intends to keep up her studies in maths and the sciences with a tentative intention for later focus on teaching or perhaps nursing.

Meanwhile, she’s all set to officiate at the village’s annual gala which is taking place from Thursday to Sunday, August 1-4.

The gala will be centred on its usual venue of Farr High School playing park while negotiations proceed over the special status of the park and whether Highland Council have the right to charge the community for its use.
