A LAND manager has hit out at wild campers who left a bag of rubbish behind them and a fire still burning in one of East Sutherland's most scenic straths.

The man, who works on a sporting estate, but did not want to be named, said he was "disgusted" when he spotted the discarded rubbish and fire at Strath Brora.

He had previously spotted the wild campers who set up camp in an idyllic spot just off the road and overlooking Loch Brora.

"I saw the tent pitched and kept an eye on it," said the man. "They were there for a couple of nights.

"The next time I passed, the tent was gone but near where it had been was a white plastic bag of rubbish. There was also a three-legged stand with a fire still burning in it.

"I understand why people would want to spend a night outdoors in the middle of such a beautiful environment but what I simply cannot understand is why they would not respect it and local residents by adhering to the 'Leave no Trace' guidance."

A similar incident occurred recently in north west Sutherland when a camp fire and was found burning within yards of historic Ardvreck Castle.
