Amazon is working to keep a distribution depot in Inverness operational.

The online retailing giant uses the NGC delivery office in the city’s Carsegate Road as its base in the Highlands but it is now understood to be at risk of closure.

A spokesman for Amazon said: "We are working to keep the site operational.

"We are supporting NGC’s drivers by engaging with other local delivery service providers who can offer them additional opportunities to deliver Amazon packages."

The Inverness premises are operated by New Generation Couriers Logistics (NGC).

They could not be contacted for comment.

There has been a sharp rise in online retail in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and lockdown measures that have seen high street stores closed and people ordered to stay at home.

NGC has one of the largest fleets of HGVs in the UK.
