An NC500 road has seen a new mystery warning sign pop-up for a local menace.

Featuring a silhouetted insect with gnashing teeth, frenzied eyes and wings — an educated guess suggests the road sign is for a midge. The sign is thought to be located on the A890 Glen Carron road, between Lochcarron and Achnasheen.

Gary Beaumont posted a photo of the sign on Facebook, amassing more than 3.7k likes and 340 shares. He captioned the post: “I should have heeded the sign and stayed in the relative safety of my car as the midge was out in force today.”

Earlier in the summer the Ross-shire Journal reported how the midge menaces reached their peak across Wester Ross, according to the Smidge Scottish Midge Forecast map.

Using a scale of 1-5 to illustrate how intense the Scottish insects are, in early July all of Wester Ross was facing levels of four and five — with Lochcarron and Achnasheen being among the worst affected spots. However, at the time of writing, the intensity of the midges in Wester Ross has now died down to levels of two and three.

For midge fans who find themselves in Wester Ross, it may be worth a visit to the renowned Midge Bite Cafe in Achnasheen, to take refuge from the Highland bugs.
