Snow has closed a key Sutherland road linking the north coast to the south of the county.

The A836 Lairg to Tongue road was closed on Thursday morning amid ongoing wintry showers and icy conditions.

Highland Council posted the update at 7.30am, warning that an articulated lorry was blocking the road to the north of Altnaharra at Loch Craggie.

The road from Altnaharra south to Lairg was still passable for local access.

The disruption comes amid widespread travel chaos in the Highlands on Thursday, with many buses, trains and even the 7am Stornoway to Ullapool ferry sailing affected by the conditions.

Thousands of Highland school pupils have also got the day off after dozens of schools across the region were unable to open due to the conditions.
