A further 42 coronavirus infections reported across the NHS Highland health board area; increase came as Scotland recorded 1330 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours

FORTY-two new positive tests for Covid-19 were recorded across the NHS Highland health board region in the past 24 hours.

The area’s cumulative number of cases rose from 3756 to 3798 when the latest daily figures were published on Wednesday afternoon.

The number of people being treated for the virus in NHS Highland hospitals rose by three, to 45, last night – and now sits just four below the peak of 49 recorded in the pandemic’s first wave.

The number of those in intensive care fell by one, to five.

Across Scotland there were 1330 positive tests for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. This represented some 6.2 per cent of all tests carried out during that window.

The number of patients in Scottish hospitals who were being treated for the coronavirus rose by six, and now stands at 2016.

But the number of those in intensive care fell by four, to 145.

Sadly, a further 92 deaths were recorded among people who tested positive for the virus in the previous 28 days.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in the north of Scotland, there were no new cases of the virus in the Northern Isles.

NHS Eileanan Siar added one new positive test, for a running cumulative tally of 171.

There were 93 newly-confirmed infections in the NHS Grampian area in the past 24 hours. It has now detected 12,167 cases since the beginning of the pandemic last spring.

And NHS Tayside recorded a further 107 infections – taking its running tally to 11,762.

There have now been 175,332 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across Scotland since the start of the pandemic.

The number of people who have received the first dose of the vaccine in Scotland increased by more than 24,000 in the past day – to 462,092.
