MORE than 1000 cases of Covid-19 have been recorded across the NHS Highland health board area since the start of the year less than two weeks ago.

Some 58 new infections were detected in the region in the past 24 hours - taking the area’s cumulative total since the start of the pandemic to 3210.

After the Hogmanay update, the region had just 2172 confirmed positive tests.

Scotland’s number of infections increased by almost 28,000 over the same period.

Meanwhile, some 1949 positive tests were recorded across the whole of Scotland in the past 24 hours. This represented 10.2 per cent of all tests in the past 24 hours.

There were 1794 people receiving treatment in hospital last night for the coronavirus. This was up 77 on the previous day.

Of those, some 134 people were in intensive care - a rise of one.

And sadly a further 79 people who tested positive for the virus in the past 28 days have died.

Elsewhere in the north of Scotland, NHS Orkney and NHS Eileanan recorded no new cases overnight. NHS Shetland’s total rose by three to 185.

NHS Grampian recorded 166 new cases in the past 24 hours, to take its running total to 10,480.

And NHS Tayside recorded 160 cases - taking its cumulative tally to 10,445.

There have now been 155,372 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across Scotland since the pandemic began.

A total of 191.965 people have received their first vaccination for Covid-19 - up from 175,942 yesterday. Around 2990 have now had their second jab.

The figures were released as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced some additional lockdown measures on Wednesday.
