Two Sutherland groups have shared a £1000 bonus to help local families in need.

Golspie-based TYKES Sutherland and the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust each received £500 from a £6,000 sponsorship by Highland firm Cairngorm Windows to good causes chosen by the Highland Third Sector Interface.

Myra Clark, manager of TYKES, which supports young carers aged up to 18 who help ill or disabled family members, said:”We’re using the Cairngorm cash to provide extra electricity for those on a key meter as well as extra bags of coal for those with an open fire.

“At a time of soaring heating costs, we’re delighted to help in this way. We’re also providing some food where it is most needed and the balance of the sponsorship will go in January or February to assist someone receiving quite a high heating bill.”

Myra added:”We support 85 young carers in the county and it’s been a challenging time as donations have dipped, so the Cairngorm funding is a real boost and enables us to help heat homes in midwinter.”

Beverley Hill, of the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust, which focuses on communities in the Ardgay and Creich area, said:”We’ve used this windfall to supply food for a Christmas meal to 22 families. It’s the first time we’ve done this and it’s been very gratefully received.

“We’ve also been running our usual Community Christmas Larder, so important at this time of year.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have been selected for this Cairngorm cash which has made such a big difference to the families involved.”

Chris Dowling, joint managing director of Inverness-based Cairngorm, the Highlands’ largest windows manufacturer, said:”We wanted to help groups which were showing the true spirit of Christmas and helping the less fortunate at this time.

“Highland Third Sector Interface asked member groups for bids and it’s been inspiring to see the good work being done.

“Sutherland can be proud of the outstanding roles being fulfilled by these two groups.”
