Dalwhinnie, the "gentle" Highland spirit, is crafted with passion in the highest and coldest distillery in Scotland.
Dalwhinnie Single Malt Scotch Whisky thrives on extreme conditions, creating a liquid as smooth and comforting as its home is remote. And the forbidding, wild nature of Dalwhinnie is at odds with the warmth of welcome that visitors can expect when they call.
An iconic building, cut into the dramatic backdrop of the Monadhliath Mountains, Dalwhinnie Distillery is easily seen from road and rail and is surprisingly accessible from all parts of Scotland and beyond.
Award-winning, guided distillery tours are offered throughout the year and soon to include a brand new cooperage exhibition and tasting area. Dalwhinnie guides bring visits to life with stories and yarns that reflect the distillery's past and present while explaining how and why Dalwhinnie whisky tastes the way it does.
For many, the highlight of a distillery tour is being able to see at close-hand the pair of magnificent copper stills that form the centrepiece of production, while for others it's the rare opportunity to get up close to traditional whisky-making features such as wooden washbacks, wormtub, and the old-fashioned dunnage warehouse.
Visitors with no time to take a tour can enjoy leisurely tasting flights of Dalwhinnie whiskies matched with the sublime, world class chocolates of Iain Burnett, the Highland Chocolatier. These flights are served on bespoke mats and wooden trays and Dalwhinnie guides describe the whiskies and chocolates in detail before leaving customers to enjoy the tastings at their own pace.
Drivers aren't forgotten and are offered tasting packs to take away and enjoy once the car keys are hung up for the evening!
The Dalwhinnie Visitor Centre is open almost all year round and is not only the focal point for tours and tastings – with friendly staff on hand to offer help and advice – but also stocks a range of single malt whiskies and whisky-related gifts. The highly popular and acclaimed "Lizzie's Dram" is the current distillery exclusive whisky – this special release is named after Lizzie Stewart to celebrate a remarkable career spanning over thirty years at Dalwhinnie Distillery. Lizzie was the world's first female operator in malt whisky distilling and this was an appropriate way of marking her retirement.
