GOLSPIE Sutherland reached the last four of the North Caledonian Cup after an impressive 3-0 victory over Thurso at King George V Park last Saturday.

All the goals came in a frantic first half which included two penalties for the home side.

Golspie were awarded the first of those in the 17th minute when Shaun Kerr was taken down just inside the area. Gary Black stepped up and rifled the spot kick into the top corner.

Incredibly, the home side were awarded a second penalty a minute later when Shane Sutherland was tripped in the box by Thurso defender John Smith. Kerr took the spot kick himself and made no mistake from 12 yards.

Golspie added a third goal four minutes from the break when Shane Sutherland outstripped the Vikings’ defence and set up Aaron Smith for a simple finish.

There were no more goals in the second period as Golspie ran out convincing winners.

Golspie are away to Clachnacuddin in the semi-finals on October 8.

IT’S back to league action tomorrow when Golspie Sutherland travel to play Dingwall Thistle at the Jubilee Park.

Golspie stopped Thistle from winning the league when they held the Dingwall club to a 0-0 draw in the last match of the season.

Stuart Sutherland, Golspie’s co-manager, told the Northern Times: "We might have drawn our last match in Dingwall but we haven’t won there since they returned to the league. However, we are hoping to change that on Saturday as we have been playing well lately. But games between the teams have always been closely contested."

Jordan Sutherland will miss the game through injury, but Adam Sutherland is available again.
