A local manufacturer has been chosen to supply more than 100 clinical and household waste bins to the new Migdale Hospital at Bonar Bridge.

The bins, costing more than £11,500 plus VAT, have been made by Environmental Hygiene Products Ltd of Tain and the company delivered the order to the new facility today.

Locality General Manager, Georgia Haire, said NHS Highland was pleased to have been able to bring business to a local firm.

She added that the choice of their bins, which have colour coded lids, also showed the CHP’s commitment to infection control.

Ms Haire said: “Some of the bins are metal and some are made of plastic. The clinical waste bins have orange lids, the household bins have black lids and each is printed with the waste type. This assists with waste segregation and helps with infection control.

“The plastic bins in patient bedrooms are an innovation and will help with cleaning, which also means they will stay looking good for longer.”

Roy Jones, who is Chairman of Environmental Hygiene Products Ltd, explained that the company has been operating from Tain for 20 years and all manufacturing takes place in Tain.

He added that it is an approved supplier to the NHS throughout the UK and has been supplying NHS Highland for more than 10 years.

Mr Jones said: “We are delighted to supply a local hospital, especially when the products are made just down the road. The Bonar Bridge job is a pleasant change for us as we normally have to travel extensively to meet our customer needs.

“Our team worked with local staff and Health Facilities Scotland (HFS) to ensure that the correct mix of clinical and domestic waste bins was supplied to Migdale Hospital.

“As part of this, we arranged a demonstration of our products for the end users, which allowed those who will be working there to make sure they were getting what they wanted.”

He added that the bins are made to a ‘hands free’ design to stop users touching the bin for infection control purposes. They have a large pedal for easy use, wheels and handles for ease of mobility and all the corners are rounded for health and safety reasons.

Mr Jones said the colour coding system, which meets Scottish Government Health Department requirements, ensures that clinical waste does not end up in landfill and domestic waste is not unnecessarily incinerated at a cost of up to £800 per tonne.

Patients and staff will transfer from the existing Migdale Hospital into the new building on June 30.
