GOLSPIE Stafford clinched their eighth successive Sutherland League title after three wins in seven days. Stafford defeated Brora Wanderers 5-1 last Wednesday, secured the championship with a 5-1 win over Embo on Friday night and followed up with a 5-4 victory over Helmsdale United on Tuesday evening. Stafford got off to a flyer against Brora Wanderers when Walter MacKay netted after just two minutes with a diving header. Shane Sutherland made it 2-0 with a shot from outside the 18-yard box and Daniel Stuart made it 3-0 when he scored at the second attempt. Wanderers reduced the deficit when Stafford goalkeeper Gordon MacRae failed to hold a Craig Sutherland shot but an own goal from Scott Smith put the outcome beyond doubt. Shane Sutherland found the top corner with a rasping free kick to complete the scoring. The title was won with a 5-1 win over Embo at Stafford Park. After a goal-less first half against Embo Daniel Stuart broke the deadlock in the 47th minute when he tucked away a Shane Sutherland assist. Craig MacKay got Embo back on level terms with a sweetly struck shot in the 55th minute. But Stafford upped a gear and Stuart was on target again with a neat lob and Shane Sutherland stretched the lead with a superbly taken free kick. Aaron Smith made it 4-1 with a tap-in and Neil Stuart executed a half-volley to round off the scoring. Stafford completed their league programme with a 5-4 win over Helmsdale United at Couper Park. Shane Sutherland scored twice in the first half as Stafford came from 2-1 down to lead 3-2 at the break. Both Sutherland's goals were identical runs from inside his own half. Aaron Smith scored Stafford's other first half goal with Greg Shearer on target twice for United, including one from the penalty spot. Stafford kept themselves in front in the second half with further goals from Smith and Liam Sutherland. Gunn completed his hat-trick for United with Greg Shearer also on target. In the other league match, Dornoch City and Brora Wanderers settled for a point apiece in a 3-3 draw at the wind-swept Meadows. In a game of two halves, Wanderers controlled the first period. Colin Hexley headed home an Andrew Wilson corner in the 15th minute to give the visitors the lead. Craig Sutherland doubled the advantage in the 25th minute when he bundled the ball home at the back post. With the elements in their favour at the start of the second half City scored twice in the first seven minutes through Chris Ross and Mathew Herbert. However, Wanderers weathered the storm and Robert MacDonald ran from the half way line to make it 3-2. City hit back and Cameron Hook levelled things up when he scored an equaliser with 15 minutes left on the clock. |
