NEWS that the Rev Fred Fulton had died peacefully at home in Braemar on 5th January was received with much sadness within the congregation of Dornoch Cathedral, particularly by those of the older generation who shared his ministry in Dornoch. Mr Fulton was ordained to the ministry of the Church of Scotland in 1942 and came to Dornoch in 1958 when the post-war blues were still evident and changes were in the air. In his 17 years in Dornoch he came to be much loved and appreciated by his congregation, as much for his style as a pastor as for his long and devoted years of service. He had a lovely sense of humour, which he expressed so quietly, as well as a wonderful voice, so articulate and clear, which he delivered with remarkable effect, sending his sound waves to all parts of the cathedral where they were heard with clarity – and all before the installation of a modern sound system! He and his family generously presented the cathedral with the magnificent brass lectern which today still graces and adorns the crossing, and which is in regular use every week. It remains a constant reminder of who he was and what he did for the cathedral over 17 years, until failing health made him move south to a smaller charge. The sympathies of all who knew him go out to his sons Bill and David and to all the family. EMcD |
