Golspie cling on to retain league trophy
Golspie Stafford 2, Helmsdale United 1
Published:  27 July, 2007

GOLSPIE Stafford retained the Sutherland Amateur League trophy for a historic fifth year in a row after beating nearest rivals Helmsdale United 2-1 at Stafford Park.

Stafford came out of the blocks the quickest and visiting keeper Wilson was the busiest of the two keepers. Veteran Pullen soon had Stafford one up when he met a cross ball into the box to nod home from close range.

Stafford were the dominant team for the remainder of the half and it was no surprise when MacKay sided footed home to add a second to put Stafford in the driving seat.

United made a better fight of the second half and a looped shot by Gordon deceived keeper Lannon to put them back in the game. They continued to pound the home goal in an attempt to get that elusive equaliser, but to no avail.

Stafford deservedly held out to claim this year’s championship.

Brora Wanderers played out a 2-2 draw against Embo in their final league game which was a rehearsal for this week’s Pattison Cup final in Dornoch – kick off 3pm.
