After School Club – Last Friday, the Kinlochbervie After School Club kicked off a series of outdoor activities with four hours of climbing and abseiling instruction at the Cape Adventure International based at nearby Skerricha on Loch Laxford.

The 16 children who attended are in all in P4-7 at Kinlochbervie Primary School and had a fantastic time. They hiked over open land to the crag where four “climbing stations” and six enthusiastic young staff awaited. It was a wild, quiet place with rocky outcrops everywhere and views out to sea with Lewis and Harris prominent on the horizon. The children worked in small teams of four each which meant that every child had lots of opportunity to participate.

In the weeks to follow, the children will be introduced to a range of skills including kayaking, survival skills, camping on “Survival Island”, raft building/races and a variety of beach activities which will include the opportunity to don wetsuits. All activities are being run by Cape Adventure International.

A grant from Highland 2007 is enabling the club to take the children to Cape Adventure and introduce them to many of the outdoor opportunities available in this area.

The Kinlochbervie After School Club is an activity club for primary school children in Kinlochbervie. It is run by parent volunteers. They hold weekly activity clubs for all primary age children and have occasional outings – to Ullapool for swimming for example. The club started in 2000 and since then they have always wanted to introduce the children to the sorts of outdoor activities that are right on their doorstep and are grateful to Highland 2007 for making it possible.
