The 8 Doors Distillery at John O’Groats was a new venue on last year's Doors Open Days programme.

Venues in Caithness and north Sutherland are being encouraged to sign up for this year’s Doors Open Days festival, the theme for 2024 being Heritage of Routes, Networks and Connections.

The annual programme aims to ensure that Scotland’s built and cultural heritage is made accessible to everyone living in and visiting the country, with venues throwing open their doors free of charge during September.

The Doors Open Days programme is coordinated at national level by the Scottish Civic Trust and locally by regional coordinators.

Events in the far north will take place over the weekend of September 21 and 22. Last year 16 venues across Caithness and north Sutherland participated.

Caithness and north Sutherland coordinator Ian Leith said: “Taking part in the festival offers a whole host of benefits that will make the planning worthwhile.

“It’s a chance to join a national celebration of Scotland’s places and stories that attracts over 100,000 visitors each year.

“Venues also have the opportunity to try something new and experiment with fresh ideas and experiences without the pressure of paying customers.”

Mr Leith can be contacted at ian@baselineresearch.co.uk or 07715 493696.

Last year’s theme was “living heritage” and venues taking part included churches, distilleries, an old railway station and two Masonic lodges.
