Mixed fortunes on Loch Brora

Members from Brora, Golspie and Dornoch angling clubs took part in a mixed boat teams competition on Loch Brora recently, with the best individual angler receiving the Clarkson Outing Cup.

Contrary to what the Met Office had predicted for the day, there were some very heavy showers and changeable winds and a very high loch from the previous day’s rain.

Thirteen members in the five club boats enjoyed mixed fortunes with 38 brownies and four finnock boated, most of which were retuned. Fish were caught from all three sections of the loch.

The best fish of the day was a superb shaped and conditioned brownie (male) caught by Michael Banks in the Killin narrows at an agreed estimated weight of 5.5lbs and showing 45 points on the measure board, which was photographed by boat ghillie, Ian Miller. The fish was safely returned to the water afterwards.

The main achievers, receiving their rewards courtesy this year of the Golspie club, were:

Best boat total – Brora 3 boat of I Miller, I Clarkson and M Banks with 116 points.

Runners up – Golspie boat of K Macdonald, J Ligerwood and A Gamblin 82points.

Best individual total – M Banks with 65points.

Best fish – M Banks with 45points.

Host Ishbel Clarkson shared the honour of boating the most fish for the day, showing up most of the men folk on how to do it. She accepted a lovely bouquet of flowers on behalf of everyone present. Thanks go to Richard and staff at Brora Golf Club for providing a splendid meal to round off a good day out.
