BRORA Rangers ended a seven match losing run thanks to a late double from Liam Baxter in a hard fought match against Fort William at Claggan Park last Saturday.

The home side had the better of the first half and Brora’s Sean McCarthy was the busier of the two keepers, doing well to keep out dead ball efforts from Sean Grant.

The keeper was in action again to stop shots from Michael Gillespie and Michael Ellis.

Brora’s first effort on target was a Baxter free kick which failed to test Fort goalkeeper Stewart Gray.

McCarthy was beaten just before half time but Jonathan Hewitt’s effort went past the wrong side of the upright.

Fort made the breakthrough in the 48th minute when Sean Ellis cut in from the left, beat three defenders, and drove the ball low into the far corner of the net for a fine individual goal.

The home side almost doubled their lead shortly afterwards when Danny MacKintosh looked destined to score. The Fort forward got on the end of an Ellis delivery but his effort was well saved by McCarthy.

Brora took full advantage of this let off and they equalised in the 62nd minute when Gary Kerr rose above the Fort defence to head home a Stuart Golabek free kick. Within a minute Fort were down to 10 men when Ellis picked up a second booking.

Brora went for the jugular and they took the lead in the 79th minute when Baxter swept home a Steven Ross delivery.

The visitors added a third in stoppage time when Baxter lobbed an uncontested ball over the Fort keeper and into

the net.

The home side were far from impressed but the goal stood and Brora stretched their advantage over Fort in the table to nine points.

Brora Rangers: McCarthy, Moir (Finlayson 75), MacLean (Kerr 46); Gibb, Golabek, D MacKay, MacLeod (J MacKay 75), MacKintosh, Ross, Smith, Baxter. Unused subs – Munro, Allan.

Brora host on-form Fraserburgh at Dudgeon Park tomorrow (Saturday) – kick-off 3pm.
