Sir – The decision of the Independent councillors to withdraw their demands for funding for roads has been greeted as a surprise by the media.
If you look at the background to this, however, what surprises me is why they did it in the first place. The Independents were an integral part of the last council which allowed the roads to deteriorate to the perilous state that they are now in.
One of the top priorities in the SNP’s recent council elections campaign was to put right this woeful state, and now that they have done just that with their long term financial plans, makes the Independents look somewhat silly.
Did the Independents do this, may I ask, in the first place as a publicity stunt as they had been left out in the forming of the new Council?
