Cape Wrath walker found after air and land search

Written byBy Mike Merritt

A bedraggled long distance walker sparked an air and land search in a remote part in the Highlands early on Monday.

Concern was raised around 2.50am about the soaked walker who was seen in the Loch Glencoul area in Sutherland in deteriorating conditions.

A spokeswoman for the Maritime Coastguard Agency said the man appeared to be a wild camper walking on the long distance Cape Wrath trail.

However the weather was poor and he was seen sheltering under rocks.

Assynt Mountain Rescue Team were alerted and the Coastguard search and rescue helicopter from Stornoway was sent in low cloud conditions, landing on the nearby shoreline at 5.30am.

Communication among the rescuers ascertained that the walker had made it to a mountain bothy and was wrapped in a foil survival blanket. He was otherwise ok and would continue with his trek
