Plans are under way for the reopening of one of Sutherland’s best loved attractions.

The Falls of Shin Visitor centre is set to open on Saturday, May 13, with a day of celebrations for the local community, dubbed Celebra-shin.

A programme of events for all the family has been devised by the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust, the community initiative behind the new facility at the Falls of Shin, near Lairg.

On the day a market village will be set up on site with stalls featuring local businesses. A range of food will also be available offering the best produce from around the Highlands.

The new grassy plaza will be playing host to a performance platform, showcasing the talents of local musicians, dancers and gymnasts throughout the day.

Interactive activities to entertain the whole family will also be running all day.

The celebrations will be rounded off in the evening with music from Sutherland Sessions.

To minimise congestion, entrance to the event is by ticket only and tickets must be bought in advance and applied for by April 30. No cars will be allowed on site and all visitors will be transported to Falls of Shin by buses running a shuttle service from Ardgay, Bonar Bridge and Lairg throughout the day.

Valerie Houston, development officer for Falls of Shin at the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust, said: “We are thrilled to have reached this stage at Falls of Shin and we are really looking forward to sharing the amazing new facilities with the whole community.

“We are expecting a big crowd on the day to join the celebrations and we would urge people to apply for tickets before April 30 to avoid disappointment as no tickets will be available on the day.”

Tickets are available for a visit in the morning from 10am to 1pm, afternoon from 2pm to 5pm, or evening from 6pm to 9pm.  For more information and to register for tickets which will be allocated by postcode working out from Falls of Shin, visit http://www.planitscotland.com/celebra-shin/ or call Cecilia at Planit Scotland on 07835 120739.

Any local businesses who would like to take a stall in the market should register their interest at http://www.planitscotland.com/celebra-shin-market/ or call Kendra Ballantyne at Highlander Weddings & Gatherings on 07715 562751.

Falls of Shin will be open to the general public on Monday, May 15, daily from 10am to 4pm until Tuesday, October 31, when it will move to seasonal opening hours.
