Scotland's 6 cities: Which one is for you?

THERE is so much to do and discover in Scotland and with six cities to choose from you'll be spoilt for choice.

Whether you're considering trekking the highlands in Inverness or catching some comedy in Edinburgh, each city has something unique to offer its visitors.

1. Inverness

Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands is a relative newcomer, only receiving its city status in 2000. One of the more relaxing Scottish destinations, Inverness is a city very much about tartan, historic battlefields and scenic rivers.

Visit the River Ness for an enjoyable day and perhaps spot a ghost or two; the infamous King Duncan from Shakespeare's Macbeth is said to walk the banks in full royal attire.

2. Aberdeen

A city of surprises, Aberdeen's cosmopolitan centre is surrounded by historic buildings which are endearingly perched on the beach. It is this fusion of characteristics which makes the city so appealing.

Staying at one of the HotelClub rooms in Aberdeen puts you in the centre of the action, giving you access to the attractions on offer. The Granite Mile is essential territory for all shopaholics, bustling with locals and tourists alike and teeming with almost 1,000 boutiques and stores for your retail pleasure.

Aberdeen is home to a copious number of castles and the only castle trail in Scotland. Discover 16 castles on this infamous route, including the Craigievar Castle which was the inspiration behind the Walt Disney Castle and the fairy-tales so famously associated with it.

3. Dundee

Known as the City of Discovery, Dundee is the fourth largest city in Scotland. Boasting an array of theatres and an assortment of museums and galleries, Dundee is definitely a must-visit. During the month of November the city comes to life with the Mountain Film Festival, Dundee's Jazz Festival, Dundee's Christmas Light Night and Fireworks Night. If you are planning to stay for a little longer, start your trip at the end of October when the Dundee Literary Festival is also in town.

4. Stirling

Stirling was granted city status in 2002 and is Scotland's capital of heritage. A perfect escape, Stirling combines medieval history with a feeling of wholesome Scottish tradition and custom. The Battles of Independence were won in Stirling and the battlegrounds are still worth a visit. Enjoy scenic walks, beautifully maintained renaissance churches and, for a touch of variety, a visit to the Old Town Jail is a must.

5. Edinburgh

Scotland's capital is a centre of vivacity and magical charm. Whether you're looking for hotels in Edinburgh to accommodate the family or are visiting with adults, there's something for everyone. Educating the children on the legendary callous castle history could not be more authentic than when experiencing the setting first hand. The city zoo is also a popular attraction for families and adults alike with its abundance of wildlife, aquariums and gardens.

For adults, Edinburgh comes to life at night when you will find many bustling bars and eateries. Enjoy the finest cocktails at the Dragonfly bar in Old Town, or if you're looking for a bite to eat before your cocktails head over to The Witchery for fine food and even finer views of the Edinburgh castle.

Visiting the capital during the summer months, particularly August, is a great time to stay; the comical Fringe Festival and the famed Tattoo Festival make for an excellent summer break that's hard to beat.

6. Glasgow

Staying in one of the 5 star hotels in Glasgow is a luxurious way to enjoy the second largest city in Scotland. Glasgow's industrial roots make it the perfect location for the industrially themed museum, situated by the River Clyde. Known for its humour, quirky eccentrics and a good old knees-up, Glasgow is essentially a city of contemporary fun with candid roots.

Winning the title of European City of the Year 2011 by the Academy of Urbanism and regarded as the secret capital of music by Time Magazine, the city's cultural success is not only hearsay. Enjoy the lively nightlife, the expanse of shopping opportunities combined with some amazing architectural buildings – Glasgow Cathedral is not to be missed.

Whatever you're looking for from your trip, you're guaranteed to find it in one of Scotland's amazing cities.
